Giving a conservation national strategy the visual presence it deserved

Predator Free 2050 is an ambitious, nationwide goal to eradicate harmful introduced predators so native species can thrive in Aotearoa.

With input from experts, communities and public consultation, the Department of Conservation (DOC) developed a new strategy and action plan which will guide predator removal work until 2030. It focuses on innovation in tools, maintaining gains, accelerating to 2050 and mobilising New Zealanders to join the movement.

A suite of publications was created to tell the public this story and support the Government's launch of the new strategy.

Creative thinking

With input from experts, communities and almost 3,400 public submissions, the documents needed to tell a story of innovation and progress.

While we wanted to reflect the effort back through considered visual design, a public-facing government document must feel effortless rather than over-designed while staying engaging.

Creative doing

The design focused on drawing out the story through considered typography, rich imagery, clean infographics and a visual hierarchy that breaks up content in a way that is easy to digest.

Creative partners

This project was in collaboration with the Predator Free 2050 and Creative Services teams at DOC, Piripi Walker (te reo Māori translator) and Blue Star (commercial printers).

The outcome

A suite documents launched publicly in March 2026 as part of the Predator Free 2050 strategy release – one of DOC's most significant conservation announcements in years, alongside a $5.5 million commitment to make Wellington New Zealand's first predator-free city. The strategy was also published in te reo Māori and accompanied by event collateral for the launch.
