Department of Conservation
te Papa AtawhaiA community glow up
A community design project that left a lasting mark – on the West Coast and on me.
Interpretation signage for two magical, family-friendly rainforest walks where glow-worms sparkle up the tracks at night.
Creative thinking
Tamariki (children) from local Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier Schools mapped out two walks with a local Department of Conservation (DOC) ranger, marking the key landmarks and the best glow-worm viewing spots. I built the design around their drawings, retaining their visual style so they could see themselves and their work in the final panels.
Creative doing
Illustration and design of two interpretation panels. The tamariki were involved throughout the review process and formally approved the final designs.
Creative partners
DOC Creative Services team, local West Coast ranger and the tamariki of Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier Schools.
The outcome
The panels are installed and in use at the start of both walks. An unveiling ceremony for each sign was held with the DOC ranger and kaiako (teachers) – one of the most delightful and rewarding experiences of my career.
